Global news agency Associated Press is partnering with more than 30 newspaper groups and 20 retail associations in the creation of iCircular, a new mobile advertising initiative. The new service provides a mechanism for aggregating coupons and product offers on a product that can be inserted into newspaper websites, providing a digital version of the coupon circulars inserted into printed copies. Revenues from printed circulars currently accounts for about 18% of total advertising revenues for newspapers, and unlike classified ads, the industry hopes to retain much of that revenue with the shift to digital.
