From Backpack to Pocket Journalism

Reflecting the inexorable pace of technology, broadcast journalism has seen the field reporting crew shrink from 3-5 (reporter, camera, sound, lighting, producer) to one - sometimes called the backpack journalist.  The BBC's taking the next step, developing an app that will enable reporters to upload images, audio, and video to BBC servers, directly from an iPhone or iPad.  In areas with 3G or better cellphone service, reporters can use third party app Luci Live to broadcast live from their devices.

Several of the larger US networks (CBS, CNN) have apps enabling individuals to record and submit multimedia content to intermediaries who might use some of it, but haven't widely used apps for direct filing of stories or live reports.
