Olympics huge success for BBC Online

The early results are in, and suggests that the BBC's online video efforts for the 2012 London Olympics will be a huge success for the once doughty broadcaster.  BBC reported that there were 1.7 million iPlayer requests for opening ceremony coverage, 7.8 million "browsers" globally (5.8 million in the UK), and 8.3 million globally (6.1 million in the UK) on Sunday.  By the end of the weekend, more than 1.15 million BBC Olympics apps had been downloaded.

The head of product for BBC Sports reported that interest during the opening weekend exceeded expectations -
"Just after 3pm on Saturday afternoon we had all our encoders in action playing 24 live video streams of sporting action across desktop, mobile tablet, connected TVs and Red Button
"And Sunday was the busiest day ever on the BBC Sport site - with 6.1 million unique browsers in the UK and 8.3 million worldwide."
